Safe to explore: The volcanic island is as safe as any other in the region to explore and enjoy. You just need to take the usual precautions such as keeping valuables hidden and being aware of your surroundings.

Away from the whitewashed houses: Enjoy those beaches, and the warm waters, but make sure to explore the island. There are the ruins of Akrotiri, the ancient city of Thera and the wineries of Venetsanos and Santo. Sip your way around the island and enjoy the Greek hospitality.
